DJI Mic 2 vs. DJI Mic: What's new exactly?

The second generation of DJI's audio recording solution, the Mic 2 is now available for purchase with prices starting from €219. But how does this new offering from the tech giant differ from the original DJI Mic? And if you are a content creator, vlogger, podcaster or filmmaker, should you invest in a Mic 2?

  1. Design changes and new color options
The Mic 2 improves on the Mic design with a sleek metal charging case that offers added security with a safety lock to protect against drops. Plus, the wireless recording transmitters are now available in two colors, Shadow Black and Pearl White, so you can choose the one that best suits your aesthetic.
  2. Improved battery life and performance
Compared to DJI's OG audio recording device, the Mic 2 stands out with a longer overall lifespan. Both microphones have an internal recording capacity of 14 hours without compression, but the Mic 2's 18-hour total runtime represents a 20% increase over the original Mic's 15 hours. Additionally, the Mic 2's ability to support internal 32-bit float recording allows it to seamlessly adapt to complex sound environments, capturing the nuances of sounds, from the quietest whispers to the highest decibel levels. This level of flexibility proves extremely valuable in irregular noise scenarios and offers greater options for fine-tuning in post-production.
  3. Direct Bluetooth connectivity
The Mic 2 maintains the DJI Mic's impressive 250-meter range while adding device connectivity options. It offers dual compatibility with Lightning and USB-C on smartphones, improved digital audio playback and, best of all, direct Bluetooth connectivity. Camera users benefit from an updated 3.5mm TRS cable connection, which allows automatic power synchronization with the camera. Mic 2's advanced digital audio capabilities, shared with computers via USB-C, further improve integration with recording setups. In contrast, the original Mic had simpler connectivity options, providing analog audio via Lightning for smartphones and stereo digital audio via USB-C.
  4. Bigger screen and improved control
The Mic 2 moves from the original Mic's 0.95-inch screen to a larger 1.1-inch OLED display and introduces a precision dial for easy adjustment of audio settings. In other words, you can now fine-tune parameters such as gain, volume and brightness to achieve an optimal audio setup even more easily. The Mic 2 also retains the acclaimed magnetic clip-on design of the original DJI microphone, so you can quickly attach the device to jacket collars, shirts or clothing in fast-paced environments where time is of the essence.

Overall, the DJI Mic 2 offers notable improvements over the original DJI Mic, including superior Bluetooth connectivity and digital audio playback via Lightning and USB-C. The updated design features a sleek metal case with secure closure, and the transmitters are now available in another color.
