Acrylonitrile styrene acrylate (ASA) is a thermoplastic that is becoming increasingly popular. ASA filament has many properties that make it ideal for engineering and outdoor applications. ASA 3D filament is the new and improved cousin of the ABS filament we've all heard of. ASA offers many similar advantages to ABS, without some of its disadvantages.

Its most important characteristics are strength, rigidity, and extreme resistance to chemical exposure and heat. It was designed primarily for professional use. It is most often used for prototypes, which must tolerate higher temperatures and be UV-resistant. Finished products made with ASA filament are highly durable and impact-resistant. They can be exposed to sunlight and heat and generally do not warp or discolor. For example, 3D prints made with ABS filament are more sensitive to sunlight and tend to deteriorate and yellow if left outdoors. These problems are avoided with ASA: it can remain in the sun for years without warping or discoloring.

Another advantage of using ASA filament over ABS filament is that it warps less during 3D printing; be careful when adjusting your cooling fan; ASA can crack in layers if the 3D printing process is too hot. This filament is a bit difficult to 3D print because it's sensitive to heat, but it can be printed with a 3D printer that doesn't have a cover. However, once printed, ASA parts are very heat-resistant and durable, making them an excellent choice for making birdhouses, custom gardening equipment, replacement outlet covers, exterior car parts, home components, sporting goods, and other outdoor parts and equipment.
