Snapmaker SnapSpeed PLA

Snapmaker SnapSpeed PLA is a PLA filament developed for high-speed 3D printing. The optimized formulation improves the fluidity of the molten material, allowing printing speeds of up to 300 mm/s while maintaining good dimensional accuracy, a smooth surface finish, and reliable performance.

It is suitable for creating models, prototypes, decorative objects, home accessories, creative projects, and hobby applications. Thanks to PLA's typical ease of printing and the ability to work at high speeds, it represents a practical solution for both daily production and rapid prototyping.

Key Features

  • PLA optimized for high-speed printing up to 300 mm/s.
  • Improved melt fluidity for smooth and consistent extrusion.
  • Good surface quality and adequate dimensional accuracy.
  • Good layer adhesion for creating solid and reliable components.
  • Compatible with 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, and 0.8 mm nozzles.
  • Compatible with Snapmaker printers and most FDM 3D printers that use 1.75 mm filament.
  • Available on 1 kg cardboard spools.
  • Ideal for models, prototypes, toys, decorations, DIY projects, hobbies, and artistic applications.
  • No significant odors during printing under correct conditions.
  • Water-insoluble material and stable under normal storage and handling conditions.

Designed for high-speed printing

SnapSpeed PLA was developed from a traditional PLA formulation, optimized to offer greater fluidity during melting. This allows the material to follow the extrusion path smoothly even at high speeds.

The manufacturer indicates a printing speed of up to 300 mm/s, using a 0.4 mm nozzle, a layer height of 0.2 mm, and an extrusion temperature of 230 °C. For more conservative use, tests at classic speeds were performed at 46.7 mm/s and 210 °C.

Actual speed may vary depending on the printer, nozzle diameter, layer height, model geometry, maximum volumetric flow rate, and environmental conditions.

Surface quality and layer adhesion

The high-fluidity formulation promotes a more uniform material deposition, helping to achieve smooth surfaces, well-defined details, and good continuity between layers.

Mechanical performance depends on print orientation. In the manufacturer's tests, tensile strength in the X-Y plane was 46.0 ± 0.5 MPa at classic speed and 43.9 ± 0.4 MPa at high speed. In the Z direction, the measured values are 37.3 ± 0.7 MPa and 32.4 ± 0.4 MPa, respectively.

These data highlight the typical anisotropic behavior of FDM components: the resistance between layers along the Z-axis is generally lower than that in the X-Y plane. For structural applications, it is therefore important to consider part orientation, number of walls, infill percentage, and printing conditions.

Mechanical performance

SnapSpeed PLA offers a good balance of stiffness, strength, and ease of printing. The main values declared in the datasheet are:

Property Classic speed High speed
Elastic modulus X-Y 2878.3 ± 74.3 MPa 2649.7 ± 78.3 MPa
Elastic modulus Z 2689.8 ± 92.0 MPa 2433.4 ± 79.4 MPa
Tensile strength X-Y 46.0 ± 0.5 MPa 43.9 ± 0.4 MPa
Tensile strength Z 37.3 ± 0.7 MPa 32.4 ± 0.4 MPa
Elongation at break X-Y 21.5 ± 5.02% 15.1 ± 3.9%
Elongation at break Z 4.2 ± 2.0% 3.3 ± 0.5%
Flexural strength X-Y 76.5 ± 0.9 MPa 71.4 ± 0.6 MPa
Impact strength X-Y 6.1 ± 0.6 kJ/m² 5.0 ± 0.5 kJ/m²

The values were obtained by the manufacturer on samples printed with a 0.4 mm nozzle and a layer height of 0.2 mm. Actual results may vary depending on the printer, slicing parameters, and printed model.

Recommended printing settings

Parameter Recommended value
Nozzle temperature 210–230 °C
Bed temperature 65 °C
Print bed Textured PEI or smooth PEI
Bed preparation Adhesive glue
Cooling fan Active
Print speed Less than 300 mm/s
Retraction length 1–1.5 mm
Retraction speed 20–30 mm/s
Chamber temperature 25–45 °C
Maximum overhang angle 60°
Maximum bridging length ≤ 30 mm
Support material PLA support

The optimal temperature must be calibrated according to the printer and the speed used. In general, temperatures close to 210 °C are suitable for slower speeds, while for high-speed printing, it may be necessary to approach 230 °C.

Drying and storage

For best results, Snapmaker recommends drying the filament at 55 °C for 6 hours before use. If the spool has been exposed to air for an extended period, it is advisable to repeat the drying cycle.

After use, store the filament in a sealed container with desiccant, keeping humidity below 20% RH. Damp filament can cause popping during extrusion, uneven surfaces, stringing, poor layer adhesion, and a reduction in overall print quality.

Compatibility and Applications

SnapSpeed PLA is compatible with FDM 3D printers equipped with a 1.75 mm filament extruder. It can be used with nozzles of different diameters, from 0.2 to 0.8 mm, by appropriately adjusting temperature, speed, flow rate, and retraction.

It is particularly suitable for:

  • Rapid prototyping.
  • Conceptual and demonstrative models.
  • Accessories and decorative objects.
  • Toys and hobby models.
  • Creative projects and DIY.
  • Artistic and design applications.
  • Functional components subject to moderate loads and low temperatures.

The material is classified as flammable and is not suitable for applications requiring high thermal resistance, strong chemical resistance, or stability in the presence of alkalis and organic solvents.

Warnings

The data reported were obtained by Snapmaker through tests on filament samples and reference 3D printers. They should be considered indicative and useful for comparison, not as design specifications or guarantees of final performance.

The quality of the result depends on numerous factors, including printer model, nozzle wear, part geometry, orientation, slicing parameters, ambient temperature, humidity, and filament storage conditions. For components intended for structural, technical, or safety uses, specific tests and verifications must be carried out before use.
