Flashforge Creator 5 and Creator 5 Pro: multicolor 3D printing with 4 independent heads
Share
Flashforge brings to market a decidedly interesting solution for multi-color and multi-material 3D printing: Creator 5 and Creator 5 Pro, two FDM printers equipped with four independent print heads.
The main innovation is the FlashSwap system, developed to overcome one of the primary limitations of traditional multi-color solutions based on automatic filament changing: long change times and large amounts of wasted material during purging.
Instead of using a single nozzle fed alternately by different filaments, Creator 5 features four separate toolheads. During printing, the machine uses the necessary head while the others remain parked in their respective stations.

Four independent heads: why is it interesting?
In traditional multi-color systems, when switching from one material or color to another, it is generally necessary to expel the material remaining inside the hotend.
This entails the creation of the classic purge towers or the expulsion of a significant amount of filament.
With Flashforge Creator 5, each material instead has its own print head.
Color switching therefore does not require replacing the filament within the same hotend: the printer parks one head and picks up the next one.
The result is a system that can drastically reduce material waste and the time required for color changes.
According to Flashforge, the new architecture can make multi-color printing up to five times faster compared to traditional filament-swap based systems.
Not just multi-color: true multi-material printing
The presence of four independent toolheads opens up interesting possibilities beyond simple multi-color aesthetic printing.
It is indeed possible to configure different heads with different materials and use them within the same component.
A particularly interesting application is the use of dedicated support materials, such as PVA or BVOH, together with the main material.
In a professional environment, it also becomes possible to design components by combining materials with different characteristics, without having to continuously load and unload the filament from the same extruder.
Print volume and performance
Creator 5 and Creator 5 Pro share a usable volume of:
256 × 256 × 256 mm
Declared performance includes a print speed of up to 300 mm/s, movements up to 600 mm/s, and maximum acceleration of 30,000 mm/s².
The hotends reach a maximum temperature of 320 °C, while the heated bed reaches up to 120 °C.
The equipment also includes automatic leveling, automatic calibration of the offset between the different heads, and dynamic flow compensation.

Creator 5 or Creator 5 Pro?
The main difference between the two models concerns the management of the print chamber.
The Creator 5 uses an open structure and is therefore particularly suitable for PLA, PETG, TPU, and standard multi-color applications.
The Creator 5 Pro instead uses a completely closed structure and integrates a chamber actively heated up to 65 °C.
This feature allows for more reliable handling of technical materials sensitive to temperature variations, such as ABS, ASA, nylon, and numerous fiber-filled materials.
The Pro version also integrates a filtration system consisting of an HEPA H13 filter and activated carbon, as well as chamber temperature control and additional features designed for professional use.
An interesting solution also for prototyping and production
The most interesting aspect of the Creator 5 Pro is not necessarily the ability to create objects with four different colors.
In a professional context, the real advantage can be the ability to have four tools ready simultaneously, reducing material changes and automating processes that would require multiple steps with a traditional printer.
This makes the machine interesting for functional prototyping, laboratories, technical institutes, universities, and small-scale production where different materials are frequently used.
The integrated Full HD camera also allows for remote monitoring, while the multi-printer management system allows it to be more easily inserted into a small print farm.
